This was taken during Earth Hour 2009, where Sheraton Utama Hotel did an event marking the occasion with a presentation and talk about the effects of Global Warming.

Will get back to the swing of things soon. Been too busy with a wedding event, and my short trip to KK. Will do a post requested by my mate from a mate of mine for a very interesting topic for you frequent travellers. Stay tuned.

This post is titled Wow... I won... by author SoulJah. KHAIRUL_NIZAM_entry_3 (by SoulJah)

This won me first prize for the local youth competition! And I'll be going to Singapore to the Asean + 3 Youth Festival representing Brunei with this photo! Awesome! Theme of the shoot for that day was Global Warming.

Caption: A monitor lizard inspects an intruder to his habitat.

Description: The use of water bottles has exploded in recent years due to the convenience of having bottled water at the ready for daily use. Numerous companies in Brunei have wholeheartedly embraced this growth market and introduce their own brands of bottled water. The bottles are actually recyclable, but either due to public indifference, or ignorance, the water bottles are unceremoniously discarded. If it doesn?t pose a direct threat to wildlife, an indirect effect of that would be global warming due to the increasing use of hydrocarbons to produce the PET bottles; it has been noted that recycling plastic material amounts to a saving of more than 50% than producing the bottles from their source materials.

The ceremony began with the recital of Surah alFatihah led by Ustaz Suprapto bin Komari followed by a brief speech from the Head Judge of the Brunei Darussalam Photographic Society, Haji Mohd Yusof bin bin Haji Mohd Yassin.

The top five winners were announced during the ceremony followed by the handing over of certificates of appreciation to all participants.

I thought last year's celebration was already huge in terms of the number of photogs descending upon the capital, but here we fielded our own platoon of shooters almost rivalling any other photography organization. Great show guys!

Syed Rory Malai Hassan
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday, October 5, 2007

A LARGE segment of the Bruneian population may not have yet been born during His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's accession to the throne 40 years ago, but The Brunei Times had no trouble finding youths who can appreciate their monarch's good work in raising the nation.

Royal Brunei Airlines employee Mohd Abd Hakim Abd Rahim feels that, as the longest-ruling working monarch in the world, His Majesty has brought about a lot of positive transformations in development for the country during his reign.

"In terms of economic development, the sultan has made the country more approachable and friendly for foreign investors which may bring about even more positive changes for the country," he said.

Rozaimi Johari, an economics teacher from Masin Secondary School, said that over the past 30 years of his own life, there have been substantial improvements which has propelled Brunei on to the international stage.

Haryatie Mohd Antin, who reads Brunei Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, said: "We are very proud to have such a caring working monarch who has successfully steered the nation's development towards greater heights in terms of education, health, economy and welfare."

"Our development - even though it may sometimes be misinterpreted as slow - is actually our way of practicing a safe and cautious policy," she added.

Nizam Rahman, an IT technician from the State Store said that as a citizen of Brunei he is very proud to have such a caring monarch who looks after the welfare of his people and considers the nation close to his heart.

"If his father, the late Sultan Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien was known as the Modern Architect of the nation, then His Majesty should be considered as the visionary leader who has successfully brought the nation on par with other countries, on an international level," he said.

"As a royal statesman, the sultan has introduced to the international stage a glimpse of the nation's people.

"His management of the preparations made by his late father which he successfully expanded and made as his own is very impressive and shows that he cares quite a lot for the development and progress of his country and nation's people."

The Brunei Times

When death comes calling, so does Oscar the cat

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) -- Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means the patient has less than four hours to live.

"He doesn't make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," Dr. David Dosa said in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

This post is titled Bantus Capoeira Showcase by author SoulJah.

After a tipoff in the forums about a Capoeira showcase at ICC, we all grabbed a chance in capturing this unique event. Graced by the guest of honor, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the event saw a packed hall mainly curious about the art of Capoeira. By the end of the event, the crowd was thrilled by acrobatic skills of the performers that night.

001_DSC_0001_processed

I arrived way too early, but that ensured I get good parking, but mostly to check the light levels that's available to me. Worked good without flash, but I made sure to ask the performer regarding flash use. While ok for the most part, he told us it's better not to have the flashes going off during his acrobatic moves. Which for the most part was ok, as I had a good ambient light reading anyway. Above, you can see how it was without no flash, taken during their last minute preparation.

Set the White Balance to Tungsten, and gel my flash for that, and for the most part, the shots looked great, considering I didn't have my monopod.

A nice and bright sunrise greets the walkers for the morning event, even though there were clouds looming, everyone managed to avoid the midday downpour which ensued a few hours later.

An occasion worthy to drag your friends out of bed of, almost everyone that day didn't walk alone, that in itself is pretty symbolic if you think about it.

There was some fair time to wait for others to arrive, so why not look around and see who you recognize.

English Premiership clubs has a managerie of teams that sports the colour red as their kits, so no wonder a lot of team club shirts were worn that day.

Some forego reasonable logic, and go all out to show their support, wearing an oversized Red Ribbon for the walk. Others opted for a smaller one handed out by the organizers.

This post is titled Indonesia plane crash kills dozens; 2 Bruneians safe by author SoulJah. YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia: At least 49 people died but scores escaped after an Indonesian passenger jet overshot the runway and burst into flames on landing in the cultural capital of Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

Dozens of passengers leapt from the plane's emergency exists into surrounding rice paddy fields to escape the inferno, which reduced the plane to a smouldering wreck of twisted metal.

Pujobroto, chief spokesman for national carrier Garuda, said flight GA 200 was a Boeing 737-400 plane carrying 133 passengers and seven crew when it crashed at around 7 a.m. after a scheduled flight from Jakarta.

One survivor told Reuters that passengers had been warned the flight would be turbulent and that most reacted calmly and orderly under the circumstances.

"As we approached the ground and I could see roofs from our window, the plane was still swaying and shaking," said Ruth Meigi Panggabean, who works for the aid group World Vision.

"Then the plane was slammed to the ground and skidded forward and slammed once again before it come to a stop," she said.

Provincial Secretary Bambang Susanto told Reuters that 48 bodies were recovered from the crash scene and one other person had died at the city's main medical centre.

The flight was carrying a large group of Australian diplomats, government officials and journalists who had been accompanying Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who was not aboard, on an official visit to Indonesia.

Downer said nine Australians were on board the plane. Five were injured and four were unaccounted for -- an air force liaison staffer, an Australian Federal Police officer, an embassy staffer and a journalist.

Garuda's media office said the plane carried just eight Australians, as well as two Japanese, two Brunei nationals and seven other foreigners.

Downer and Prime Minister John Howard of Australia said they had received no information that would suggest terrorism or sabotage was a factor in the disaster.

The crash came a day after two powerful earthquakes hit the neighbouring Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing 72 people according to the country's disaster management agency.

Crash survivor Din Syamsudin, the head of Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, told Elshinta news radio of his lucky escape.

"Some passengers wanted to get their hand luggage. I cried to them, 'Get out, get out'," he said.

"The plane was full of smoke. I just jumped from two meters high and landed in a rice field." He said the plane burst into flames soon after he escaped.

World Vision's Panggabean said under the circumstances, "the passengers were fairly calm and the evacuation process was quite orderly".

Survivors were taken to a number of area hospitals.

"We are treating 10 to 15 passengers. They are all fine. An 8-months-pregnant woman is o.k., and so is her baby," said Constantine, a nurse at Panti Rapih Hospital.

Robert Heath, an aviation disaster expert, said aircraft speed might have been a factor in the crash.

"From what I can see so far the aircraft appeared to land intact and that may point to excess speed being a factor," said Heath, a professor at the University of South Australia.

"The fire may have been caused by the nose wheel hitting things as it ran off the runway or engine destruction."

Indonesia has suffered from a string of transport accidents in recent months, including an Adam Air plane that disappeared in January with 102 passengers and crew on board, and a ferry sinking in late December in which hundreds died.

The series of accidents had sparked the government to set up special commissions to look at the state of transportation safety in the sprawling archipelago of 17,000 islands.

Editor's Note: Early reports that the two Bruneians are safe, and only one of them suffered a fractured bone.
