The “Superfreak” is no more. Yesterday morning, notorious funk musician Rick James died at age 56 of natural causes in Los Angeles.
James was almost as famous for his ’70s and ’80s funk hits as he was for his subsequent drug and legal problems – including an assault in which he burned a woman with a crack pipe – that landed him in jail the early ’90s.
The singer-instrumentalist, famous for his beaded braids, had been in the midst of a mini-renaissance thanks to some appearances on the second season of“Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central. Comic Dave Chappelle was planning on starring in a feature film based on James’ life.
